Do I need stitched edges on a desk pad?

Stitched edges prevent fraying and seal fabric layers, so if snagged, the pad won’t unravel. Unstitched pads can last years if made with a tight weave or rubberized edge. For daily use over five years, get stitched; for casual or backup use, unstitched is fine. It’s a nice feature, not a necessity.
