Do I need ECC RAM for a home NAS?

Non-ECC RAM is fine for a home NAS. The risk of a flipped bit corrupting data is astronomically rare in practice—your drives are more likely to fail. Spend your money on more drives or a UPS instead. ECC only matters for production workloads or multiple VMs; for media storage, backups, or Plex, your cat is a bigger threat.
