Can I run an extension cord through a wall?

Don’t run an extension cord through a wall. It violates code (NEC 400.8) because extension cords aren’t rated for in-wall use and can overheat, short, or start a fire. Instead, install a junction box with proper NM-B cable and a weatherproof fixture. If you’re not comfortable with that, call an electrician.
