Can I bury a regular extension cord?

No. A standard extension cord isn’t rated for direct burial — the insulation degrades, water gets in, and you risk a short circuit or fire. Use a cord marked “direct burial” or “UF” instead, bury it at least six inches deep, and run it through PVC conduit for extra protection. For temporary landscaping lights, low-voltage landscape lighting is safer and cheaper.
