Backwashing by pressure gauge vs calendar schedule: Pressure gauge wins for efficiency and filter health

Backwash when the pressure rises 8–10 psi above your clean starting pressure, not on a fixed schedule. Calendar-based backwashing wastes water and DE because the filter only knows when it’s dirty. Let the gauge guide you β€” check weekly, note the clean pressure, and only flush when you see that jump. DE filters are especially sensitive: over-backwashing when pressure is barely up reduces filtration efficiency by preventing a proper cake from forming.
