Are sand filters better than cartridge filters for most pools?

For a typical in-ground pool, a sand filter is cheaper, simpler, and lasts longer. It traps dirt in sand, backwashes to flush gunk, and a $15 bag of sand lasts five years. Cartridge filters filter finer but require frequent cleaning and expensive replacements. Go sand for a real pool; cartridge only for tiny pumps or spas.
