7 Steps to Winterize a Pool With an Automatic Cover
Drop the water level Lower the water about 6 inches below the tile line, below the skimmer.
Blow out and plug the lines Blow out return and skimmer lines, add antifreeze, and plug them.
Drain the equipment Drain the pump, filter, and heater completely.
Balance and treat the water Test and balance the water chemistry, then add winterizing chemicals.
Disconnect and protect the motor Disconnect the automatic cover motor from power or flip the breaker. If exposed, cover it with a waterproof box or plastic wrap.
Lubricate the tracks and fabric Lubricate the tracks and the fabric’s underside to prevent freezing debris from tearing it.
Close the cover and add a pump Run the cover fully closed (or leave a few inches open per your manual for drainage). Install a cover pump on top to prevent standing water from freezing and straining the mechanism.
