6 Things to Know About Adjusting Total Alkalinity in a Saltwater Pool

Use a drop-test kit, not strips For accurate results, use a Taylor K-2006 or similar drop kit. Strips are only good for quick checks.

Target 80–120 ppm total alkalinity This range keeps your pH stable. Test and adjust to stay within it.

Raise alkalinity with plain baking soda Add 1.5 pounds of sodium bicarbonate per 10,000 gallons to increase TA by 10 ppm. Dissolve it in a bucket of pool water first, then pour around the edge.

Lower alkalinity with muriatic acid Use muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate to reduce TA. Go slow—acid also drops pH, so aerate afterwards.

Never adjust alkalinity and pH at the same time Fix alkalinity first, then let pH settle. Small adjustments, wait 24 hours, then retest.

Don’t overthink the salt system Your saltwater system doesn’t change the chemistry much. You’re just managing water.
