6 Steps to Winterize an Above-Ground Pool

  1. Drain only below the skimmer and return lines Never empty the pool completely. A mostly empty pool can collapse from groundwater pressure or ice expansion.

  2. Clean the water thoroughly Skim, vacuum, and balance chemicals. Shock the pool, add algaecide, then apply a winterizing chemical kit.

  3. Blow out the plumbing lines Use a shop vac to clear water from the skimmer and return lines, then plug them. A cracked return line is a common and costly spring problem.

  4. Drain and store the pump and filter Remove all water from the pump and filter. Store them indoors if possible to prevent freeze damage.

  5. Install an air pillow Place an air pillow under the center of the cover. It absorbs ice pressure and protects the pool walls.

  6. Cover tightly with an above-ground pool cover Secure the cover so it stays in place all winter. A loose cover lets in debris and can tear.
