6 Steps to Winterize an Above-Ground Pool With a Sand Filter
Lower the water level below the skimmer. This prevents ice damage to the skimmer and return lines.
Balance the water chemistry and add winterizing chemicals. Proper chemistry prevents algae and staining during the off-season.
Backwash the filter, then drain the filter tank. Remove the drain plug and store it somewhere safe so you can find it in spring.
Leave the sand in the filter. Do not remove the sand. Just drain the water. Sand is fine over winter and makes this filter type lower maintenance than cartridge systems.
Disconnect and store hoses indoors. Hoses left outside can crack from freezing.
Cover the pump and filter with a tarp or dedicated cover. Leave the drain plug open so any remaining water can escape. In deep freeze climates, also pull the pump drain plugs and store the pump indoors.
