Check the pump lid O-ring A dried-out or cracked O-ring is the most common cause. Clean it, lubricate with silicone lube, or replace it if flattened.

Inspect the drain plug A loose plug or missing gasket lets air in. Tighten it or replace the gasket.

Examine the shaft seal If you ran the pump dry, the seal may be burned. Replacing it is messy — call a pro if you’re not handy.

Verify the skimmer basket and water level Low water or a clogged skimmer can pull air. Keep the water level above the skimmer mouth.

Test for leaks with a hose Run the pump and spray water around likely spots. Listen for a pitch change or watch for bubbles in the pump lid.

Consider a buried suction line leak If all seals are good but prime still drops, you may have a pipe leak underground. That requires leak detection or replacement.
