6 Steps to Backwash a DE Filter Without Damaging the Grids

Turn off the pump and wait 10 seconds for pressure to drop before moving any valves. Sudden pressure changes crack grids, so never switch valves while the pump is running.

Move the multiport valve to BACKWASH or push the slide valve gently. Rattling the handle too fast can damage the valve or grids.

Turn the pump back on slowly — let pressure build gradually instead of flipping the breaker to full power. Blasting water through too fast is the most common cause of grid failure.

Backwash until the sight glass runs clear, usually 2-3 minutes. Running longer than needed flexes the grids and fatigues the seams.

Turn off the pump, set the valve to RINSE for 30 seconds, then turn off again. Rinse settles the grids before returning to normal filtration.

Set the valve to FILTER and restart the pump normally. Add DE only after backwash and rinse are complete — never before.
