6 Reasons 16GB Is the New Minimum for AAA Gaming

  1. 8GB causes stutters and hitches in modern games Even Elden Ring, a well-optimized title, will stutter and hitch on 8GB. The experience is noticeably worse than on 16GB.

  2. Windows and background apps eat several gigabytes before the game starts With 8GB, the OS and background processes consume 2-3GB, leaving only about 5GB for the game. That is not enough for modern AAA titles.

  3. The system resorts to swapping data to your drive When RAM runs out, the system swaps data to your SSD or hard drive. This causes micro-stutters when entering new areas or fighting bosses.

  4. SSDs help loading times but cannot fix RAM shortages While SSDs improve raw loading, they cannot compensate for insufficient RAM. The system still chokes when streaming assets.

  5. 8GB only works for older titles or if you close everything else You can get away with 8GB for older games or by shutting down all other apps. But for anything released in the last few years, you are handicapping yourself.

  6. Upgrading to 16GB is the best performance-per-dollar investment A $40-$60 upgrade to 16GB (or 32GB if possible) provides the single biggest performance improvement for gaming. Future you will thank you.
