5 Ways to Find What’s Draining Your MacBook Battery

  1. Open Activity Monitor first Even light use can drain your battery if something is running in the background. Go to Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and click the Energy tab.

  2. Sort by Energy Impact Look for anything using more than 20 when you’re not doing obvious work. Chrome and its extensions are usually the worst offender, even with just a few tabs open.

  3. Check common culprits Zoom, Slack, and Mail indexing keep the CPU awake without looking like heavy work. Browser tabs with ads are also notorious battery hogs.

  4. Look for Spotlight re-indexing or rogue widgets After a system update, Spotlight may re-index and drain power. A bad widget or app version can also chew through battery unexpectedly.

  5. Quit or reduce background activity Once you find the culprit, quit it or adjust its preferences to limit background activity. This can give you an extra hour or two of battery life.
