5 Tips for Running a Variable-Speed Pool Pump

  1. Run the pump at the lowest speed that still works There is no ideal flow rate. Match the speed to what you need at that moment, not a specific GPM.

  2. Use 1200–1800 RPM for normal filtration Most of the day, you only need enough flow to keep water moving through the filter and skimmer. That is usually 20–40 GPM depending on your plumbing.

  3. Do not run at 3450 RPM unless necessary Cranking it to max speed wastes electricity and wears out bearings faster. Only use high speed for vacuuming, water features, or after heavy rain.

  4. Set the speed for one turnover in 8–12 hours Calculate your pool’s volume in gallons. Then adjust the pump to achieve that turnover at the lowest RPM possible.

  5. Keep the skimmer working and flow-sensitive equipment triggered Run slow enough to save energy, but fast enough that the skimmer functions and devices like a heater or salt cell activate.
