5 Tips for Running a Variable-Speed Pool Pump Efficiently

  1. Run the pump at the lowest speed that still keeps the water clean. Power consumption drops with the cube of speed, so cutting speed in half uses roughly one-eighth the power.

  2. Set the timer for the minimum runtime needed. Most pools only need one full water turnover per day, which at low speed takes 8–12 hours.

  3. Avoid short bursts at high speed. Running longer at low speed uses far less electricity than a short blast at high speed, even if the high-speed run is shorter.

  4. Schedule operation during off-peak electric hours. Run the pump overnight or early morning to save on electricity costs.

  5. Start with 8 hours at 1200 rpm and adjust downward. Check water clarity and reduce speed or runtime as needed. Your pump will last longer running at lower speeds.
