Use two dynamic mics close to the soundboard Place two SM57s or Beta 56s inside the piano, pointing at the soundboard through the holes in the metal frame. One over the bass strings near the top, one over the treble section toward the middle.

Keep mics 2–3 inches off the board This captures the body resonance and felt thud, not the harsh hammer attack. The proximity effect adds warmth.

Angle mics away from the hammers Point them so they catch the thud of the felt hitting the string, not the slap. Avoid direct hammer alignment.

Close the lid or pull the piano from the wall An open lid reflects harshness. If you can, close it. Alternatively, pull the piano out a foot so the low end can breathe.

Roll off high end and add subtle compression In the mix, cut around 7 kHz and compress gently to even out dynamic jumps. The mic placement does 90% of the work.
