5 Things to Know Before Using Household Bleach in a Pool

Household bleach and pool chlorine are both sodium hypochlorite, but pool chlorine is typically 10-12% concentration while household bleach is 6-8.25%. You need to adjust dosage accordingly.

Only use plain, unscented, additive-free bleach. Avoid any product with thickeners, scents, or “splash-less” polymers, as these can mess with pool chemistry or leave unwanted residue.

Calculate the correct amount. A rough rule: 8 ounces of 6% bleach per 1,000 gallons raises chlorine by about 0.5 ppm. Do not dump in a whole bottle.

Never mix bleach with other pool chemicals. Always test the water after adding it.

This is a backup option for emergencies. Proper pool chlorine is better, but if the store is out, the cheapest generic unscented bleach works in a pinch.
