5 Things to Know About Tall RAM and Big Air Coolers

  1. Most tower-style CPU coolers overhang the RAM slots, so tall heatspreaders can physically block the fan or heatsink.

  2. Standard RAM is about 30–33mm tall, while tall RAM can reach 40–50mm. Many big air coolers only clear RAM up to 35–40mm on the first slot.

  3. Motherboard layout matters. Some boards offset RAM slots further from the socket, giving more clearance; others place them right against the cooler.

  4. Check your cooler’s official clearance spec—Noctua lists these for every model—and compare it to your RAM height before buying.

  5. If you already own the cooler, your options are: buy low-profile RAM, move the cooler fan higher or to the rear (reducing airflow), or switch to an AIO liquid cooler.
