The DS1623xs+ uses DX1222 expansion units, not the common DX517. This is a key difference from other Synology models in its class.

Each DX1222 adds 5 additional bays. With the DS1623xs+ having 6 internal bays, one expansion unit brings the total to 11 bays.

You can connect up to two DX1222 units. This gives a maximum of 16 bays total.

The DX1222 is designed for higher-performance setups. It supports 10GbE connectivity, matching the DS1623xs+’s built-in 10GbE port.

Check compatibility before buying expansion hardware. If you already own DX517 units, they will not work with this model.
