5 Things to Know About Shocking Your Pool
Shock at night Sunlight burns off chlorine fast. Adding shock at dusk gives it all night to work without UV interference.
Test water first High pH or cyanuric acid will block the shock. Adjust pH to 7.2–7.4 before adding anything.
Measure your dose Calculate based on pool gallons and the shock product’s chart. Guessing leads to wasted chemicals or ineffective treatment.
Mix shock in a bucket of water Never add water to dry shock—it can explode. Pour the mixture around the pool edges with the pump running.
Wait before swimming Run the pump for 8–12 hours. Do not swim until chlorine levels drop below 5 ppm.
