5 Things to Know About Saltwater Pool Corrosion
Saltwater pools use low-salt water (around 3,000 ppm) and a chlorine generator, not actual seawater. The salt water is conductive, and the electrolysis process creates chlorine that aggressively attacks metal.
Cheap stainless steel, brass, aluminum, and zinc are vulnerable. Over time, they develop pitting and rust if not properly rated for saltwater use.
Use titanium heat exchangers, high-grade stainless (like 316L), or plastic parts for pool equipment. These materials resist corrosion from the salt and chlorine.
Standard brass fixtures and cheaper stainless railings will fail. If you retrofit, swap rusting parts with marine-grade hardware.
Don’t blame the saltwater if you used fixtures meant for a traditional chlorine pool. The problem is material choice, not the system itself.
