5 Things to Know About Running Your Pool Pump in Summer
Run your pump 8–10 hours a day. That’s the sweet spot. Less risks algae, more just wastes electricity.
You need at least one full water turnover per day. Most single-speed pumps achieve that in 8–10 hours. Variable-speed pumps can run longer at lower speed for less money.
Run the pump during peak heat, midday to late afternoon. That’s when chlorine burns off fastest. Running then keeps chemical levels stable.
Clean your filter regularly. A dirty filter slows circulation, so your 8-hour run might not actually turn the water over.
Start at 10 hours, then adjust down. Test water clarity after a week. If it looks good, try 8 hours. Don’t go below that in summer unless you’re certain.
