5 Things to Know About RAM for a Dell PowerEdge T320

The T320 uses standard DDR3 ECC memory, but it is picky about rank and speed. You cannot just use any old stick.

The server accepts both UDIMMs (unbuffered, up to 16GB per slot) and RDIMMs (registered, up to 32GB per slot). Never mix UDIMM and RDIMM in the same system.

Do not mix single-rank and dual-rank DIMMs in the same memory channel. The Dell manual explicitly forbids this.

Match memory speeds to 1333MHz or 1600MHz. The system will clock all RAM down to the slowest stick installed.

Buy RAM that explicitly lists compatibility with the Dell PowerEdge T320 or includes a Dell part number. Generic server RAM often fails the boot-time memory training check, causing beep codes.
