5 Things to Know About RAM and BSODs

  1. Random BSODs on heavy workloads usually mean a bad RAM stick, not a missing ECC feature. ECC logs errors but still crashes on uncorrectable ones; non-ECC doesn’t cause BSODs by itself.

  2. Run MemTest86 or Windows Memory Diagnostic overnight to check for errors. If you get errors, replace the faulty stick and see if BSODs stop.

  3. Check the event log for WHEA errors or memory-related bugchecks. These confirm the RAM is the problem, not the label.

  4. If RAM passes, the issue is likely elsewhere — power supply dips, overheating CPU, or a driver problem under memory pressure. ECC is nice to have but not a fix for unstable hardware.

  5. Swap the faulty stick before swapping the whole server’s infrastructure. That’s the most likely and cheapest fix.
