5 Things to Know About RAM and Audio Dropouts

  1. RAM alone won’t fix dropouts Dropouts—pops, clicks, and glitches—are almost always a CPU or buffer problem, not a RAM problem. More RAM helps load larger sample libraries, but it doesn’t make your processor faster.

  2. The CPU is the bottleneck Your DAW processes audio in real time. If the processor can’t keep up, you get dropouts. Each virtual instrument still needs CPU cycles, regardless of how much RAM you have.

  3. Raise your buffer size first For mixing, set your buffer to 512 or 1024 samples. For tracking, use a lower setting. This is the simplest fix for dropouts and costs nothing.

  4. Freeze or bounce heavy tracks Freezing renders a track to audio, freeing up CPU. Bouncing does the same permanently. Both reduce real-time processing load.

  5. Check your audio interface drivers Bad drivers cause dropouts even with a fast CPU and plenty of RAM. Update drivers or consider a better interface before buying more RAM.
