A busy or high-contrast pattern can cause jittery or skipping cursor movement. Optical mice take microscopic photos of the surface to detect movement, and patterns like camo, marble, or glossy photos confuse the sensor.

The sensor mistakes the pattern for movement or loses its reference point. It starts seeing the pattern as movement when it’s not, leading to erratic cursor behavior.

Solid colors work best for reliable mouse tracking. Even a subtle texture is fine, but avoid busy graphics or high-contrast designs.

Test by flipping the mouse pad to a plain side or using a plain piece of paper. If the cursor calms down, the pattern is the problem.

Skip fancy graphics unless the surface is matte and low-contrast. Glossy or high-contrast patterns are likely to cause issues.
