5 Things to Know About Pool Temperature for Swimming and Lounging
Lap pools should be 78–80°F Swimming generates body heat. Warmer water makes you overheat, feel sluggish, and raises your heart rate. Competitive pools are often 76–78°F.
Leisure pools should be 82–86°F You don’t generate much heat when relaxing. Warmer water keeps you comfortable. Above 86°F is hot tub territory, fine for soaking but not for moving.
Don’t try to split the difference One temperature cannot serve both purposes well. Pick a priority: cooler for workouts, warmer for family fun.
Warm water ruins lap swimming Above 82°F, you pay more in energy costs for a worse workout. That is inefficient.
If you want both, accept the cold or build two pools Lap swimmers who also lounge must get used to cooler water. There is no compromise that works for both.
