5 Things to Know About Pool Pump Runtime
12 hours is the standard recommendation for a single-speed pump in summer. But a variable-speed pump can run half that time at lower speeds and still keep the water clear.
The goal is to turn over your pool’s water once every day. Divide your pool’s gallons by your pump’s flow rate in GPH to find your minimum runtime.
For most residential pools with a single-speed pump, 8 to 12 hours is enough. If your water is clear, try reducing runtime by an hour each week until you see haze, then increase again.
Running the pump longer than needed just wastes electricity. Running it too little risks algae growth.
If your pump is oversized or your pool is small, you might need only 6 hours. Test and adjust based on your pool’s clarity.
