Aim for one full pool turnover every 8–12 hours Your pump should move a volume of water equal to your entire pool in that time frame. This keeps water clear without wasting energy.

Calculate your target flow rate in GPM Divide your pool volume in gallons by desired turnover hours, then by 60. For example, a 20,000-gallon pool needs about 28–42 GPM.

Measure actual flow with a bucket test Time how many seconds it takes to fill a 5-gallon bucket from a return jet. If it takes 10 seconds, that’s 30 GPM.

Most residential pools need 30–60 GPM Too high wastes electricity and wears out the filter faster. Too low leads to cloudy water.
