5 Things to Know About Mixing RAM Timings
Your system downclocks all RAM sticks to the slowest CAS latency and speed. A CL16 stick paired with a CL18 stick will force both to run at CL18.
XMP or DOCP profiles become unreliable with mismatched sticks. The motherboard defaults to slower JEDEC specs instead.
Mismatched RAM can cause boot loops, crashes, or random errors. It’s not guaranteed to fail, but it’s risky for gaming or production work.
If you must mix brands or timings, run MemTest86 for several passes before trusting the setup. Don’t skip this step.
A matched kit of two or four sticks is cheap insurance. Debugging random blue screens later is not worth the savings.
