5 Things to Know About Mixing ECC and Non-ECC RAM
ECC and non-ECC RAM cannot be mixed in the same system. Even if the physical sticks fit the same slot, the motherboard and CPU must explicitly support ECC. Consumer boards almost never do.
Mixing them is not a supported configuration on any system. Even on rare workstation boards that support ECC, mixing ECC and non-ECC sticks is not allowed. The system will either ignore the ECC stick or refuse to boot.
The best-case scenario is the motherboard runs with just the non-ECC sticks. You will not get a clean total of both capacities combined. For example, a 24GB non-ECC pair plus a 16GB ECC stick will not yield 40GB.
The worst-case scenario is the system fails to POST or becomes unstable. Mixing can cause boot failures or random crashes, making the system unusable.
Stick with matching non-ECC sticks for reliable performance. The extra ECC RAM is effectively a paperweight in a consumer system. Use only identical non-ECC modules.
