5 Things to Know About Minecraft Server RAM

  1. 8GB to 16GB is the sweet spot for most servers For 10 players with 50 mods, 8GB to 16GB is plenty. Most popular modpacks run comfortably on 6GB to 8GB for a small group.

  2. 64GB is overkill for a Minecraft server Unless you are running a data center or hosting a hundred players, 64GB just burns money on your server bill. It ties up RAM you could use for other things.

  3. CPU single-core performance matters more than RAM The real bottleneck is usually CPU single-core performance and garbage collection tuning, not raw RAM. Throwing more RAM at it can actually make performance worse.

  4. Too much RAM can hurt performance If Java’s garbage collector has to sweep through a giant heap, performance can degrade. Stick with 16GB and allocate 10GB to 12GB to the server JVM.

  5. Save 64GB for other tasks A database server or video editing rig benefits from 64GB. A Minecraft server does not.
