Use a dedicated depth gauge tool and flat file Eyeballing it leads to inconsistent raker heights. A flat file guide is the only reliable way to keep them uniform.

Correct raker height is critical Rakers set at 0.025 to 0.030 inches below the cutters is typical, but check your chain’s manual. Too high makes the saw scrape; too low causes bogging and kickback risk.

File flat and level Place the guide over the raker and file with a smooth, level stroke across the top. Never angle the file, and do not touch the cutter teeth during this step.

Check with the feeler gauge after filing The guide tool includes a notch or feeler to verify correct height. If it fits properly, move to the next raker.

Clamp the bar securely when filing on the saw Use a vise or stump vise to keep the chain from flopping. A few passes per raker, then test on a log—if too aggressive, file the cutter instead.
