5 Things to Know About Extension Cords for High-Power Tools

  1. Shorter and thicker is always better For high-power tools, a short cord with lower gauge (thicker wire) outperforms a longer cord with higher gauge. This is physics, not opinion.

  2. Voltage drop is the problem Longer cords have more resistance, and higher gauge (thinner wire) adds even more. Your tool gets less voltage and draws more current, which heats the cord and can damage the motor.
