5 Things to Know About Extension Cord Fire Hazards

An underrated extension cord is a fire hazard. If the cord can’t handle the power draw, it heats up and can start a fire.

Check the device’s power rating on its label. It will list watts or amps. If watts, divide by 120 to get amps for US standard voltage.

Match the cord’s amp rating to the device. The cord’s rating is printed on it or its packaging. Never use a cord rated lower than the device’s draw.

A cheap 16-gauge cord works for a lamp but not a space heater or saw. Space heaters pull 12-15 amps, requiring at least a 14-gauge cord, preferably 12-gauge.

If unsure, buy a heavy-duty cord rated for 15 amps or more. They are not expensive. The alternative is a fire from saving a few dollars.
