5 Things to Know About ECC RAM Compatibility
ECC RAM requires both a compatible motherboard and CPU. Most consumer hardware does not support ECC, or runs it in non-ECC mode silently.
The CPU’s memory controller must support ECC. On Intel, you typically need a Xeon or Core i3 with a C-series chipset motherboard. On AMD, Ryzen Pro or Threadripper with a workstation board works.
Standard Ryzen CPUs are hit-or-miss with ECC. Some boot with ECC, but others ignore the error correction entirely.
The motherboard BIOS must be wired to handle ECC. Check the motherboard’s qualified vendor list (QVL) and CPU specs before buying.
Upgrading to ECC is not a simple swap. If your current setup isn’t ECC-capable, expect to replace both the motherboard and possibly the CPU.
