5 Things to Know About ECC RAM and TrueNAS Transfer Speeds

ECC RAM is not a speed bottleneck for TrueNAS transfer speeds. Your hard drives are the bottleneck, not the RAM type.

Four spinning hard drives max out around 500-800 MB/s sequential. That is far below what any modern DDR4 or DDR5 RAM can handle, ECC or not.

ECC adds a tiny latency penalty of about 1-2% in synthetic benchmarks. This is invisible in real-world file transfers and only matters for latency-sensitive databases or NVMe arrays.

The real question is whether you need ECC for data integrity, not speed. ZFS can detect and correct bit flips in memory with ECC, but for a home NAS with media storage, non-ECC is fine.

Your transfer speeds depend on your HDDs, network, and SATA controller. The RAM type has no meaningful impact on throughput in this setup.
