Pitch is the distance between drive links Measure from one drive link to the next. Common pitches include .325 inch and 3/8 inch, which look similar but are not interchangeable.

Gauge is the thickness of the drive links This determines how tightly the chain fits in the bar groove. Using the wrong gauge means the chain will not stay on.

Check the bar and chain package for numbers The bar has pitch and gauge stamped near the mount. The chain package lists both. If unsure, bring the old chain to the store for matching.

Measure with a caliper if you must Do not guess. Use a caliper to measure drive link spacing and thickness. Measuring twice saves buying the wrong chain or a new bar.
