5 Things to Know About Anchoring a Beach Canopy

  1. Sandbags are non-negotiable Pushing canopy legs into sand is not enough. Use sandbags that zip around each leg or tie gallon jugs of water to the frame.

  2. Use at least 20 pounds per leg Lightweight weights will fail in a breeze. Each leg needs a minimum of 20 pounds to stay put.

  3. Replace plastic stakes with spiral ones The stakes that come with most canopies are weak and pull out easily. Long spiral stakes that screw into the sand hold far better.

  4. Angle the canopy into the wind Set the back lower than the front. A flat profile catches less air and reduces lift.

  5. Check beach rules before using stakes Some beaches ban stakes entirely. If stakes are allowed, use the spiral type for best grip.
