50 feet is the safe maximum for a 16-gauge cord at 10 amps. Pushing to 100 feet causes noticeable power loss and risks overheating the cord.
Voltage drop is the main issue. At 50 feet, the drop is about 2.5%, which is fine for most tools. At 100 feet, it doubles to 5%, making motors run hotter and slower.
Coiling a long cord under load is dangerous. If you run a heavy load through a 100-foot cord that is coiled up, it can get dangerously hot.
16-gauge is rated for 13 amps in free air, but you must derate it. A 10-amp tool uses nearly 80% of the cord’s safe capacity, so do not push distance or load.
