5 Things to Check When a Pool Pump Hums but Won't Push Water

  1. Prime the pump first Turn off the pump, unscrew the clear strainer lid, fill the basket with a hose until full, replace the lid tightly, and restart. This fixes air locks almost every time.

  2. Check the strainer basket for debris A clogged basket blocks water flow. Remove and clean it before trying anything else.

  3. Inspect the skimmer weir door If the weir door is stuck closed, the pump can’t pull water. Make sure it swings freely.

  4. Verify the suction-side valve is open A closed or partially closed valve on the suction line prevents priming. Open it fully.

  5. Confirm the pool water level is high enough If the skimmer is sucking air because the water is too low, the pump will lose prime. Top off the pool.
