5 Steps to Winterize Your Pool Pump and Filter
Balance the water chemistry first Adjust alkalinity, pH, and shock the pool a few days before closing. Get this right before touching the equipment.
Lower the water level and blow out the lines Drain water below the skimmer and return jets. Blow out the lines with air or use plugs carefully.
Backwash the sand filter, then drain it Run one last backwash cycle, then drain all water from the filter tank. Leave the multiport valve set to “winter” or “open” to prevent freeze damage.
Disconnect and drain the pump Remove hoses and drain the pump completely. Store them indoors if possible.
Cover the pool with a tight-fitting cover A cheap cover that sags into the water is a waste of money. Buy one that fits snugly and stays above the surface.
