5 Steps to Winterize Your Plumbing Before the First Freeze

Shut off the main water valve Turn off the main water supply to the house, then open every faucet inside and out to drain the lines. Flush toilets until tanks and bowls are mostly empty, then sponge out remaining water from the bowls.

Drain outdoor spigots Disconnect all hoses, drain the spigot, and close the indoor shut-off valve for that line if you have one. Leave the outdoor spigot open so trapped water can expand without cracking the pipe.

Insulate exposed pipes Wrap pipes in crawlspaces, basements, and unheated garages with foam pipe sleeves. Avoid rags or newspaper—they absorb moisture and freeze, making the problem worse.

Blow out sprinkler systems Use an air compressor to clear sprinkler lines, or hire a professional. Sprinkler lines are shallow and will crack if water freezes inside them.
