5 Steps to Winterize Your Above-Ground Pool and Avoid Costly Repairs

Lower the water level Drain the pool to 4–6 inches below the skimmer opening. This prevents ice from pushing into the skimmer and damaging it.

Remove and drain the pump and filter Take out the pump and filter, then drain them completely. Any water left inside will freeze, expand, and crack the housing.

Blow out the return lines Use a shop vac or compressor to force all standing water out of the return lines. This is the most critical step—skipping it can lead to split pipes and a $200+ repair.

Plug the openings Install expansion plugs or freeze plugs in the return fittings and skimmer hole. Add a skimmer guard or gizmo to absorb ice pressure inside the skimmer.

Cover the pool The cover is the easy part. Focus your effort on the plumbing, because that’s where real damage happens if you cut corners.
