5 Steps to Winterize an Above-Ground Pool Without Costly Mistakes

Balance the water chemistry first Test and adjust pH, alkalinity, and chlorine before lowering the water level. Unbalanced water can damage the liner over winter.

Lower the water below the skimmer Drain the pool to about 4-6 inches below the skimmer opening. Do this before draining the pump to avoid the liner popping out.

Drain the pump and filter completely Remove all drain plugs and store them somewhere visible. A cracked pump housing from trapped water is an expensive replacement.

Blow out the return lines and plug them Use a shop vac or compressor to clear water from the lines, then install winter plugs. Skipping this lets water seep back and freeze, cracking fittings.

Install an air pillow and secure the cover Place an air pillow under the cover to absorb ice expansion and reduce stress on the walls. Tighten the cover enough to keep out leaves and critters, but don’t overtighten.
