5 Steps to Winterize a Saltwater Pool

Balance the water first Adjust pH to around 7.2, alkalinity to 80-120, and calcium over 200. Add a winterizing algaecide and phosphate remover — saltwater pools still grow algae.

Lower the water level and blow out lines Drop the water to six inches below the skimmer. Blow out return lines and the main drain, plug them, and add non-toxic antifreeze.

Remove and store the salt cell Take the salt cell out of the plumbing, clean it if crusty, and store it dry. Ice can crack it if left in the line over winter.

Don’t drain the pool unless necessary A little ice on top is fine. Only drain if you live where it stays below -30°F for weeks — an empty pool can pop out of the ground.

Turn off the salt generator at the breaker No point having it run all winter. This simple step protects the system.
