5 Steps to Winterize a Salt Cell

Clean the cell first Use vinegar or a mild acid solution to remove mineral buildup before storing. Buildup hardens over winter and becomes harder to remove later.

Disconnect the cell from the plumbing Remove it from the system so water cannot freeze inside. Frozen water cracks the cell, which costs hundreds to replace.

Store it in a dry, above-freezing location A garage, basement, or shed works. Wrap it in a towel or bubble wrap to protect it from bumps.

Remove any other water-trapping components Flow switches and similar parts can also crack if water freezes inside them. Check your manual for specific instructions.

Keep it dry unless the manual says otherwise Most cells store fine dry. A few require storage in a bucket of water, but dry is safer when you are unsure.
