5 Steps to Winterize a Pool Without Draining It
Lower the water level Drain the pool to 6-12 inches below the skimmer. Draining it completely risks a popped liner or cracked shell from ground water pressure.
Blow out the lines Use a shop vac or compressor to force all water out of the return and skimmer lines. Any leftover water can freeze and crack the pipes.
Plug the lines immediately Insert plugs into the lines while the vac is still running, then remove the vac. This keeps the lines dry and prevents ice damage.
Add winterizing chemicals Pour in algaecide and drop in a floater with chlorine tablets. This stops algae and bacteria from growing over the winter.
Cover the pool Secure a winter cover over the pool. Drain the pump and heater separately if you have them—they need their own winterization.
