5 Steps to Winterize a Pool in a Mild Climate

  1. Lower the water level Drop the water to just below the skimmer and return jets so ice cannot crack them.

  2. Add winter chemicals Use a winterizing kit with oxidizer, algaecide, and clarifying agent to keep the water clean through the season.

  3. Cover the pool A good cover keeps debris out and reduces maintenance when you reopen.

  4. Drain and store filter components For a sand filter, drain the water and leave the valve open. For a cartridge filter, remove the cartridge and store it indoors.

  5. Protect the pump and lines Install a winterizing plug in the pump and add a floating winter pillow to absorb ice expansion. A little antifreeze in the pump is cheap insurance against a surprise freeze.
